British Conservatives kill move for maney ease-up

Memebers of Britain's ruling Conservative Party decisively rejected pleas by former leader Edward Heath for them to soften Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher's tough economic policies.

the 4,000 party representatives who gathered at their annual conference -- which in its first day was shaping into the stage for a revolt against Mrs. Thatcher -- gave a standing ovation to the chancellor of the Exchequer, Sir Geoffrey Howe, when he defended the Thatcher government and policies that have limited government borrowing, frozen the greation of new public-sector jobs, and maintained high interest rates.
