Silence
October 19, 1981
The muffling of a noise does not make silence, for quietness is but an interval between two sounds that move into alliance,
and batter it against each other's wall.
Silence is something else, I have discovered;
a wave of inwardness that takes the soul
on a white wind on which it lies uncovered,
and all about it noiseless wonders roll.
Be lifted on that wind, the depths of heaven
also are that alive; look in your heart,
and you will find you have the treasure even
as your life makes you of that calm a part.
