CEOs question education

October 19, 1981

Over half of the chief executives of 139 leading US corporations think a liberal arts education does not relate to the needs of today's business. So states The Gallagher Presidents' Report, a weekly newsletter for corporate executives. Over three-quarters of those surveyed point to deficiency in oral and written communication.

Most of those surveyed, however, are willing to help do something about higher education. Over 80 percent consider taking an active role in the development of undergraduate curricula. Nearly two-thirds are willing to participate in an executive exchange program (on-campus residency for executives; business residency for members of the academic community). Seventy percent have a corporate policy supporting schools, with an average yearly donation of $122,764.
