Six guards held briefly by Iowa prison inmates

Six guards were taken hostage briefly by knife-wielding convicts at the Iowa State Penitentiary Monday in the prison's second uprising in six weeks, state officials said.

One injury was reported before the guards were released, but officials said they did not know the identity of the victim or the extent of the injuries.

An aide to Gov. Robert D. Ray said 112 inmates roamed outside their cells in the 144-year-old prison, which houses more than 800. Until recently inmates had been confined to their cells and not allowed exercise because of a Sept. 2 riot that resulted in the death of one inmate and caused $1.3 million in damage. Inmates won a court order to reinstate the exercise periods.
