Weinberger: Protests on Euromissiles misguided

October 27, 1981

Mass protests against US missiles in Europe are misguided, since unilateral disarmament would invite Russian aggression, US Defense Secretary Caspar Weinberger says.

Mr. Weinberger just returned home from a European trip that included a NATO meeting affirming an earlier decision to deploy advanced US nuclear-tipped missiles in Europe.

He said he respects the right to demonstrate against nuclear weapons but thinks disarmament is the wrong way to preserve peace.

''Anything that gets 150,000 on the march has to be taken seriously,'' he said, ''but it doesn't change the policies of a government."
