Japan may tax exports to placate the US, Europe

Japan is thinking of slapping a fee on exports in efforts to reduce the trade imbalance with the US and Western Europe, say Japan Fiance Ministry officals. There is talk of a 10 percent surcharge to be imposed on certain industries, possibly including makers of video tape recorders, ships, color television sets, vehicles, watches and clocks, the officials said.
