Polish dissident leader calls for free elections

Polish dissident leader Jacek Kuron appealed to the people of Poland to demand free elections and prepare for a democratic future as the logical continuation of the Solidarity union movement.

The veteran activist released the manifesto of his new organization, which called for ''the free exchange of social and political ideas.'' He carefully labeled the group a discussion club, not a political party, to avoid trouble with Communist authorities.

Trouble came anyway during the group's initial meeting Sunday. Police agents tried to disrupt a gathering at Mr. Kuron's home, declaring it illegal, but their five-hour search and occupation of the apartment had little effect. Other dissident leaders simply moved their meeting to the union's offices. Kuron was ordered to appear at Warsaw police headquarters Monday to answer questions.
