Deng directs attack at Chinese leftists

December 3, 1981

Vice-Chairman Deng Xiaoping has unleashed a fierce attack against Maoist supporters in the Communist Party, accusing them of leftist ''liberalism'' and warning that a new Cultural Revolution could destroy China's achievements.

The attack, appearing in a party journal, followed a major speech Tuesday by Premier Zhao Ziyang, who warned that bourgeois ideology was spreading. The twin attacks appeared certain to sharpen a growing ideological struggle within the party headed by Mr. Deng.
