In Japan, the hot item for smuggling isn't gold, or watches, or furs - it's violins. Japan's Kyodo News Service, quoting ''persons concerned in musical circles,'' said nearly 90 percent of symphony orchestras that tour Japan from the United States, West Germany, Austria, France and Britain for the past 30 years have smuggled in extra violins to sell.
