Tanzanian steps aside in balloting for UN job

United Nations, N.Y.
Foreign Minister Salim Ahmed Salim of Tanzania has decided to withdraw his name temporarily from Security Council voting for UN secretary-general, diplomatic sources said Tuesday.
Kurt Waldheim, who sought an unprecedented third term as secretary-general, announced last week that he did not want any further balloting on his candidacy, but it is widely assumed that he is available for a draft.
Mr. Waldheim was vetoed 16 times by China, and Mr. Salim has been vetoed by the United States. Neither power is likely to shift, diplomatic sources say.
