Princess of Wales No. 1 in British popularity poll

The Princess of Wales has overtaken her husband, Prince Charles, to become the most popular member of Britain's royal family, according to a public opinion poll.

The princess was voted the ''No. 1 royal'' by 61 percent of the people interviewed. Prince Charles took 22 percent, compared with 70 percent a year ago. Votes for Queen Elizabeth dropped from 40 to 10 percent.

The survey indicated that some 94 percent of the people believed the royal romance and wedding had increased the popularity of the monarchy. In a 1973 poll , over a third of people asked were in favor of abolishing the monarchy. Now only 6 percent want to scrap it.
