'Angels' press shooting inquiry

January 5, 1982

A representative of the state attorney general's office was to meet with Guardian Angels chief Curtis Sliwa Monday to discuss the fatal shooting of a member by a Newark police officer last week, an official said.

The official said the office considers last week's shooting of Angel Frank Melvin serious enough to warrant the meeting. He said the session was to take place after Mr. Sliwa and a group of followers arrived in Trenton after a two-day, 60-mile march from Newark. The Angels marched to press their call for a state investigation of the shooting, charging the Newark police department with a ''cover-up.''

Angels chapters in New York, Miami, Philadelphia, Chicago, San Francisco, and Boston planned to hold memorial candlelight vigils Monday.
