The lifting of South Korea's nationwide curfew for the first time in 36 years is a recognition in part of the success of the South Korean and US governments in ensuring the security of that peninsular nation since the invasion by North Korean forces back in 1950. It is to be hoped it also reflects a perception on the part of the South Korean leadership that there must be a gradual loosening of the tight controls imposed on society if the government is to win and maintain popular support.
