Illinois veteran of House to retire in redistricting

January 14, 1982

US Rep. Robert McClory (R) of Illinois, stung by a Supreme Court decision that upheld the Democrat-sponsored plan to carve up and redistrict Illinois, announced Wednesday he will not run for reelection, ending 20 years in Congress and his chances to chair the important House Judiciary Committee. He would have lost much of his Chicago-area district under the new rules.

Mr. McClory gained national prominence as a member of the committee when it considered impeaching President Nixon. He is the first casualty of redistricting required by the 1980 census.
