No Tijuana-taxi gas bargains

In 1982, residents of Brownsville, Texas; Nogales, Ariz.; and San Diego will have something in common besides sunshine. No more cheap gasoline - that is, no more filling up the tank across the Mexican border at a 40 percent saving over United States prices on premium.

Petroleos Mexicanos, the state petroleum monopoly, has boosted its low gasoline prices with the idea of eventually bringing these into line with the US figures. It may also be encouraging reduced driving in Mexico. Pump prices for premium at the new Mexican rate will be about $1.35 a gallon.

The biggest energy bargain for border-city owners of many trucks and cars will still be the purchase of Mexican diesel fuel, at about 35 cents a gallon.
