West Germany reports record trade surplus

West Germany last month recorded its largest-ever monthly balance-of-payments surplus, according to official figures.

An Economics Ministry spokesman said the preliminary report of a current-account surplus equal to $2.1 billion for December was a sign the country was ''on the right road.''
