Begin urges Reagan against weapons sale

Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin appealed to President Reagan Feb. 15 not to permit the sale of F-16 fighter jets and mobile antiaircraft missiles to Jordan, a proposal made by US Secretary of Defense Caspar Weinberger over the weekend.

Addressing a special debate in the Knesset, Mr. Begin said Jordan's King Hussein wanted the weapons to attack Israel. He also criticized Mr. Weinberger for not stopping in Israel during his Middle East trip last week.

Mr. Begin said he has asked Israel's new ambassador to Washington, Moshe Arens, to seek clarifications on the proposal to determine if it represents administration intentions or just Mr. Weinberger's views. Mr. Begin recalled President Reagan's commitment to preserve Israel's ''qualitative edge'' over the Arabs.
