EC leader meets Reagan, complains of high rates

February 18, 1982

President Reagan and Belgian Prime Minister Wilfried Martens met Wednesday at the White House to discuss economic policy.

Prime Minister Martens was in Washington more as president of the European Community than as head of Belgium. He brought the message that US interest rates are too high and are damaging both the American and European economies.

He met with the President, Secretary of State Alexander M. Haig Jr., Vice-President George Bush, and others in the Oval Office for a review of the world economic situation.
