France, Germany discuss economic unity, US signal

France and West Germany began two days of talks which they hope will reinforce their economic cooperation and make clear to the United States the strength of European distress over its high interest rates.

Chancellor Helmut Schmidt began twice-yearly discussions with President Francois Mitterrand, which will also cover Common Market problems and the Polish crisis.
