Indonesia's offshore claim recognized by Malaysia

Indonesia and Malaysia signed a maritime treaty under which Malaysia became the first country to recognize formally Jakarta's controversial ''archipelagic principle.'' Under this plan, Indonesia claims 660,000 nautical miles surrounding its widely scattered 13,000 islands in territorial seas.
