Hatfield wants aid cutoff, if El Salvador rejects talks
March 10, 1982
Washington
Republican Sen. Mark Hatfield of Oregon said he will ask the Senate to stop all military aid to El Salvador unless its American-backed junta seeks ''good-faith'' negotiations with the leftist guerrillas.
Senator Hatfield, chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee thatfunds the United States foreign aid program, said he will introduce his legislation later this week.
The administration is asking $166 million in military and security aid for El Salvador for fiscal year 1983.
