Afghan rebels are blaming themselves for their defeat north of Kabul last week.

Informed sources say rebel leaders admit a lack of cooperation between rebel groups led to a victory for the Afghan Army. The rebels reportedly also fault their headquarters across the border in Peshawar, Pakistan, for not giving adequate support.

The rebels suffered a major defeat when Soviet and Afghan Army tanks leveled villages known to be rebel strongholds. The rebels have confirmed that more than 1,000 were killed and 700 arrested. Afghan resistance sources call the attack a "massacre."m
