Reagan nominates new Navy and Air Force chiefs

Congress is expected to approve Gen. Charles Gabriel, a veteran of the Korean and Vietnam wars, as chief of staff of the Air Force, and Adm. James Watkins, currently commander-in-chief of the US Pacific Fleet, as chief of naval operations. At left is US Army Gen. John Vessey, who will become chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, succeeding the retiring Gen. David C. Jones.
