Leftist guerrillas, defying a call by Guatemala's new military rulers to lay down their arms, blew up power stations over the weekend. No casualties were reported. Police said several parts in northwestern Huehuetenango Province had long blackouts and one town had electricity supplies cut for two days.
The Guerrilla Army of the Poor, one of Guatemala's four main insurgent groups , claimed responsibility.
Meanwhile, two top police chiefs linked to rightist death squads were jailed by the new military junta in an attempt to eradicate paramilitary groups, authorities said.
