Bush arrives in Seoul to assess Korean security

Vice-President George Bush visited US troops near the tense Korean demilitarized zone and told South Korean officials Washington would continue to work in close harmony with the Seoul administration.

Mr. Bush, the most senior Reagan administration official to visit South Korea , is on the second leg of a five-nation Pacific tour. He and South Korean President Chun Doo Hwan will discuss security in the Korean peninsula, where the United States maintains 40,000 troops in the south.

From Seoul, Mr. Bush goes to Singapore, Australia, and New Zealand. There has been speculation he may extend his trip to China to discuss US-Chinese differences on planned American arms sales to Taiwan.
