There's a push on in the Senate to collect on those overdue Polish loans.

Sen. Daniel Patrick Moynihan (D) of New York is leading an effort to pass legislation that would force banks to call in overdue Polish loans. Observers say the move has increasing support.

An earlier effort failed when opponents won the backing of farm-state senators who didn't like tacking the plan onto farm legislation. This time it's an amendment to the Urgent Supplemental Appropriations bill.

Default is seen as hurting the Soviets. The USSR would have to bail out Poland's ailing economy. Some $400 million in loans are due this year.
