Energy secretary has job offer
Washington
Secretary of Energy James B. Edwards confirmed he has been offered a post as president of the Medical University of South Carolina, but has not yet decided if he will accept the job.
Mr. Edwards, a dentist and former governor of South Carolina, issued a formal statement in response to press reports saying he would leave the Reagan administration by June 30.
During his 1980 election campaign, President Reagan pledged to close down the Energy Department, which was established by his predecessor, Jimmy Carter. The dismantling process, which was to have transferred many of the agency's functions to the Commerce Department, has yet to take place.
''I came to Washington to work myself out of a job, and that job is not yet complete,'' Mr. Edwards said. He said he would submit legislation to Congress this month to begin the reorganization of Energy Department activities and to work toward successful passage of nuclear waste disposal laws.
