Reagan letters to Peking distress Taiwan regime

The Taiwan government and local press expressed concern over letters from President Reagan to the Peking government and the recent visit to China by Vice-President George Bush.

In a letter to Premier Zhao Ziyang, dated April 5, Mr. Reagan said arms and spare-parts sales to Taipei could be expected to decrease as progress was made on a peaceful solution to the Taiwan dispute.

A Taiwan Foreign Ministry spokesman said the letters indicated Washington had ignored Taiwan's interests. The US State Department has denied the letters represent a shift in policy on Taiwan.
