Solidarity leader freed for treatment in London

Polish authorities freed Jan Jozef Lipski, a senior official of the suspended independent trade union Solidarity, and gave him permission to travel to England for medical treatment.

Mr. Lipski was a co-founder in the 1970s of the Polish dissident movement KOR , whose work helped create conditions for the formation of Solidarity. As a senior official in Solidarity's Warsaw region, he was under investigative arrest charged with involvement in a strike at the Ursus tractor plant shortly after the military takeover last December.

Mr. Lipski said he intended to return to Poland for his trial after treatment , and said neither he nor his wife wished to emigrate.
