Rain of British pamphlets urges Argentine surrender

June 4, 1982

British jets swooped over Port Stanley, the Falklands capital, and dropped thousands of leaflets Thursday urging Argentina's 7,000 besieged troops to surrender, the Ministry of Defense said.

It said the leaflets included copies of an open letter from Rear Adm. John Woodward, commander of the naval task force, to the Falklands' military governor , Brig. Mario Menendez.

The pamphlets rained down as Argentine troops on commanding heights outside Port Stanley prepared for the order to attack.
