Security Council holds up Falklands cease-fire vote

June 4, 1982

The UN Security Council deferred a decision Thursday on a proposal for an immediate cease-fire in the Falklands after this was revised to include a renewed call for Argentine withdrawal from the territory.

There was a procedural wrangle over a motion by Spain, which sponsored the resolution along with Panama, for a two-hour suspension before voting.

Members could not agree on the length of the suspension and the brief meeting was adjourned, without a time having been set for a resumption of debate.

Sir Anthony Parsons, for Britain, and Jeane Kirkpatrick, for the United States, both said they would have to consult their governments about the revised proposal.
