Election pairings take shape
Among congressional and gubernatorial contests set up for November in this week's primary elections:
In Ohio, Rep. Clarence Brown (R) will run for governor against former Lt. Gov. Richard Celeste (D). And in the primary for the Senate, Sen. Howard Metzenbaum (D) came out on top. He will run against state Sen. Paul Pfeifer.
In South Carolina's primary, William Workman easily captured the Republican gubernatorial nomination. He will face off against Gov. Dick Riley.
Arkansas's former Gov. Bill Clinton (D) got his wish to run against Gov. Frank White next November.
In Iowa, Democrat Roxanne Conlin became the first woman to be nominated for governor by a major party in her state. She goes on to battle Lt. Gov. Terry Branstad.
Maine's Gov. Joseph Brennan won the Democratic nomination to run for a second term. His Republican opponent is Charles Cragin.
In New Jersey, Rep. Millicent Fenwick won the Republican Senate race by a few percentage points. She will vie with Democrat Frank Lautenberg.
Voters also went to the polls in Virginia and North Dakota, but no statewide races were to be decided in those states.
