AFL-CIO to White House: remember Polish pledge

June 15, 1982

Pledging to continue support for Poland's workers until they are free again, the AFL-CIO unveiled a 24-foot-long sign Monday on its headquarters building across Lafayette Park from the White House calling for the Reagan administration to remember its promises to impose strong sanctions on the Polish government if it failed to abandon repressive measures.

The sign will keep a day-to-day count for the duration of the military and police crackdown on Polish unionists and jailing of leaders, Monitor contributor Ed Townsend reports.

Newsweek magazine reported Sunday that Polish officials decided to end martial law in July, release detained Solidarity leader Lech Walesa in August, and approve the creation of new labor unions when Mr. Walesa is freed. The magazine said the plan is endorsed by the Kremlin leaders.
