Parti Quebecois will fight in next national election
June 15, 1982
Hull, Quebec
The ruling Parti Quebecois (PQ), whose goal is greater independence for Quebec, decided to fight Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau's Liberal Party in the next Canadian parliamentary elections.
The PQ has so far only operated at the provincial level in Canada's two-tier federal system, winning power in Quebec, the country's only predominantly French-speaking province, for the first time in 1976. The party's aim in entering federal politics is to cut the hold Mr. Trudeau, chief opponent of the PQ and Quebec Premier Rene Levesque, has had on the Quebec vote in federal elections.
