President Efrain Rios Montt imposed martial law on Guatemala Thursday, vowing that anyone caught with large amounts of weapons would be sentenced to death.
In a nationally televised address, General Rios Montt said special courts will be set up to try suspected rebels, ''and anyone convicted of subversive acts will be shot immediately'' by a firing squad. He said his June amnesty program for guerrillas would not be extended.
