New fiction and nonfiction briefly noted; Droll matchmaking from Pym; An Unsuitable Attachment, by Barbara Pym. New York: E. P. Dutton. 256 pp. $12 .50

Here's another imperturbably droll comedy of romantic manners by the late English writer. Like the nine other Pym novels, this one is a roundelay of matchmaking undertaken by well-meaning parishioners of a church set in a London suburb, temporizing practiced by eligible young men unready to be so bartered, and conversations - ceaseless conversations - in which the dialogue sometimes shows a dangerously high aphorism content. Pym is a minor artist, but her books retain their essential effervescence and charm.
