In an earlier Shelter column featuring the unusual construction method that Tom and Ebeth Scatchard used to build their home in Charlotte, Vt., the finished cost of the house was put at $5,000. This, however, was the cost of getting the house ''livable'' by the first winter.
At that stage the heavy beam walls remained unclad. Covering the outside, adding more insulation, and paneling the interior the following year brought the final material cost up to $11,500.
Having a well dug and long driveway laid down brought the total cost of the house to $15,000, the Scatchards say.
