There are only two tunes on the entire album, but no matter. Coltrane and company take ''Bye Bye Blackbird'' and a Trane original, ''Tranein' In,'' and work them into monumental statements that defy description. This was a transitional period for Coltrane - he had left his bop years behind, and was reaching further and further out in his solos into harmonic territory not previously explored. But it's not so much the experimental aspect of this music that makes it so moving, it's the depth of feeling. Put on the headphones and close your eyes for this one.
