John Coltrane: ''Bye Bye Blackbird, His Greatest Concert Performance.'' Coltrane, tenor saxophone; McCoy Tyner, piano; Jimmy Garrison, bass; Elvin Jones , drums. Pablo Live 2308-227 - Speaking of magic, and of Coltrane, here it is: the legendary John Coltrane quartet in an astonishing performance from a European tour back in 1962. There are only two tunes on the entire album, but no matter. Coltrane and company take ''Bye Bye Blackbird'' and a Trane original, ''Tranein' In,'' and work them into monumental statements that defy description. This was a transitional period for Coltrane - he had left his bop years behind, and was reaching further and further out in his solos into harmonic territory not previously explored. But it's not so much the experimental aspect of this music that makes it so moving, it's the depth of feeling. Put on the headphones and close your eyes for this one.
