UN acts to avert move into Iraq by Iranians

Iranian troops massed at the country's Iraq border brought political cross fire between the UN and Iran. In a unanimous resolution Monday night, the UN Security Council called for a cease-fire in the war between Iran and Iraq, an immediate end to military operations, and withdrawal of forces to internationally recognized boundaries. It also decided to send UN observers to verify and supervise the cease-fire and withdrawal.

Iranian Prime Minister Mir Hossein Mousavi flatly rejected the resolution and said the 22-month-old conflict would continue until Iraq paid reparations and met other demands.

White House deputy press secretary Larry Speakes said President Reagan was monitoring the tense situation and remained hopeful the Iranians will not mount an invasion.
