The United Automobile Workers started a petition drive to require automakers to put a majority of American-made parts in cars sold in the United States, saying the proposed federal law would create 800,000 jobs in four industries.
UAW president Douglas Fraser said the bill is the union's No. 1 legislative priority, and 118 House sponsors have been lined up for the proposed legislation. The bill purportedly will add a total of 800,000 auto, steel, rubber, and aluminum industry jobs to the economy.
