Pope John Paul II called off his planned August visit to his native Poland.
The Pontiff was told by Polish Foreign Minister Jozef Czyrek Tuesday that his visit would not be opportune, political sources said.
In Warsaw, Gen. Wojciech Jaruzelski, the Polish military leader, said Wednesday that there must be peace in the country and no threat to the state before the Pope could visit.
