They could be dubbed the Golden State's Great Debates.

Out California way, Jerry Brown and Pete Wilson finally have agreed to at least four debates in their quest for the US Senate. Two-term Democratic Governor Brown, and San Diego Mayor Wilson, a Republican in his third term, have set their verbal bouts for Aug. 12, and Oct. 6, 11, and 15. All debates will be available for statewide radio and TV. Brown has aggressively sought as many debates as possible. Wilson, though willing to debate, has waxed coy as the two danced the debate-negotiation waltz - an increasingly familiar feature of US politics.

Wilson won't debate after Oct. 15 because ''we need at least three weeks (after the debates) to set right anything he (Brown) may have offered in the debates which is not accurate.''
