In small town America

July 26, 1982

Sometimes

in small town America

summer is so green, so cool,

so pervasive, so deep,

that opening your door, you swim into it

as if you were entering an ocean.

All the way up and down the street

the stems of trees rise, rise,

rise into greenness,

like kelp from the sea floor;

and in that shimmering twilight

you breathe with your mouth open,

tasting the morning.
