2,500 Britishers mark end of Falklands conflict

Police mounted extensive security operations Monday at a church service marking the end of the Falkland Islands conflict to protect the royal family and political leaders from possible attack by Irish guerrillas.

The 2,500 in attendance included Prince Charles and the Princess of Wales (her first public engagement since giving birth to a boy June 21); Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher; former Prime Ministers Edward Heath, James Callaghan , and Lord Home; and Britain's military leaders.

In Buenos Aires Monday, at the opening of a two-day Latin American summit meeting to rally economic support for Argentina, President Reynaldo Bignone told representatives of 19 nations that his country would continue to strive for sovereignty over the Falklands.
