How pulling the plug can save $546 million. . . .
The plug was pulled on nuclear power plants being built by the Tennessee Valley Authority. The plants were part of the nation's largest concentration of nuclear facilities. Eight of the 17 plants were put on the back burner when demand for electricity dropped and building costs soared. Now the TVA staff recommends canceling four of those eight. ''It's unlikely they (the TVA board) would turn this down,'' says a spokesman. In fact, TVA crews already are salvaging parts at all eight plants in limbo.
Savings to TVA customers: $546 million over 20 years. (P.S. And the lights won't go out.)
