Old varieties of plants are valid options

There is nothing wrong with growing the old varieties of flowers and vegetables. Continue growing them if they perform better for you than the new varieties, advises a University of Connecticut Cooperative Extension ornamental horticulturist.

Dr. Edwin D. Carpenter reports that the most successful gardeners try new introductions but reorder only those that do best for them. They continue to succeed by combining good, old varieties with proven new ones.
