Long Island school board lifts its book ban

A Long Island school board, whose ban of nine books went all the way to the US Supreme Court, voted to return the works to library shelves after over six years of banishment.

But in lifting the ban, the Island Trees School Board, covering four Long Island communities, ruled parents of students who take out the books must be notified their children are reading works that had been banned. The reversal appeared to reflect weariness with the long fight touched off by the ban rather than a fundamental change in opinion.
