Irish official called home amid storm over an arrest

August 17, 1982

Irish Attorney General Patrick Connolly was scheduled to cut short a US vacation and fly into a political storm here over the arrest of a murder suspect at his Dublin apartment.

Newspapers and politicians demanded an explanation of why the suspect, Malcolm MacArthur, charged with two killings Saturday, gave Mr. Connolly's penthouse apartment in a wealthy Dublin seaside suburb as his home address. Prime Minister Charles Haughey summoned Mr. Connolly home to discuss the situation. A government statement said Connolly had not been asked to resign, nor had he offered to quit his post.
