Grandson of former slave on House ballot in Dixie

The grandson of a former slave became the first black in Mississippi to win a Democratic nomination for Congress, but he faces a stern challenge in November against a well-financed GOP candidate.

Robert Clark, now a member of the Mississippi Legislature, piled up more votes than the combined total of three white opponents Tuesday in a hotly contested race for the House seat being vacated by Democratic Rep. David Bowen. Mr. Clark drew on a reservoir of black support from the newly created Delta district, but he apparently also had a lot of white votes.
