President Reagan formally notified Congress of his proposal to sell Taiwan 60 F-5E and F-5F jet fighters in line with his pledge to maintain the island's defenses.
Congress has 30 days to veto the sale, but no members have announced an intention of trying to do so. The President said in a statement accompanying Tuesday's announcement that the US-Chinese agreement did not reduce his commitment to help Taiwan maintain adequate defenses.
